Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by Jana over at That Artsy Reader Girl. Every Tuesday, you pick ten books on that weekβs topic. This week, we are looking at those side characters. You know, those Secondary/ Minor Characters Who Deserve More Love.
1 / Samwise, from Lord of the Rings trilogy
I am looking at Samwise, silent, good and supporting till the very end. Without Samwise, evil Sauron would still be about.
2 / Little John, from (Disney’s) Robin Hood
This giant of a man / bear is Robin Hood’s man Friday. What’s not to love? Especially when the VO is from Phil Harris.
3 / Dr. Watson, from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
I am speaking of the books here – did anyone else ever feel that poor Watson just didn’t get enough credit? And a skilled surgeon at that!
4 / Sydney Carton, from A Tale of Two Cities
A hero who goes to the gallows for love’s noble cause. Some day, we could have a retelling about how he managed to escape after all!
5 / Master Yoda, from Star Wars
Look, there are some Star Wars books too out there, so this entry is NOT cheating. Seriously, Master Yoda has the best lines.
6 / Tyrion Lannister, from Game of Thrones
Tyrion’s tongue-in-cheek snark gets me every time. He was literally the only voice of reason in GOT. And a (mostly) wise kingmaker too.
7 / Morgiana, from Alibaba and 40 Thieves
Anybody remember the clever Morgiana? Alibaba stole gold from the bandits, but it was Morgiana who saved him from them.
8 / Passepartout, from Around the World in 80 Days
He is Phineas Fogg’s street-smart, goofy and loyal valet/ fellow-traveller. Ever dependable in the world trip quest.
9 / March Hare, from Alice in Wonderland
Oh, him and his watch! If only Alice hadnβt seen him, she would never have gone down that particular rabbit hole. Where would we be then?
10 / Marilla & Matthew Cuthbert, from Anne of Green Gables
Where would Anne Shirley be, if the Cuthberts hadn’t been around? This shy brother and crusty sister duo were the perfect guardians.
Alrighty! Tell me who your favorite side characters are. Did our lists match up in any way? Let’s share the book love!

Yes, I loved Tyrion!

Iβd love to read more about Samwise!
My post: https://lydiaschoch.com/top-ten-tuesday-secondary-characters-who-deserve-more-love/
I haven’t read all of those books but those that I do know, I totally agree. My favourite: Sydney Carton.
Thanks for visiting my TTT earlier.
Ooh, yes! Tyrion was one of my favourites in the series. I loved him π
What a great list! I do love me some Samwise.

Sigh, Samwise. <3 <3 <3
Little John’s story would be an interesting angle to take!
That’s a very interesting lens for Robin Hood, you’re right!
I’ve been thinking so much about Disney’s Robin Hood lately. I really wanna rewatch it!
It’s so funny too! I remember watching it on a plane back home and went chuckling/ giggling throughout.
Fun choices for this week’s TTT! I didn’t even try to do this one. π
Samwise Gamgee is the absolute greatest character ever and I love him so much!
What fun choices you listed! I love the idea of more Tyrion – he’s been one of my all-time favorite characters from the series. And he’s a much-needed voice of reason, basically the only one (aside from Ned). Awesome list! I suddenly have the urge to reread A Tale of Two Cities, which was one of the few required high school books that I actually didn’t mind.
Tale of Two Cities has a sob warning attached to it, but of course all worth it. Hope you give it a try! And Tyrion is such a gabster, but such a wonderful gabster. ;P
Great list! I love every character that Phil Harris voices. When you watch the classic Disney movies, you know it’s him.
I twisted the topic some, as I have trouble remembering secondary characters.
When you get the chance, I hope you stop by my post: https://readbakecreate.com/10-books-that-deserve-more-love/
Phil Harris rocks, indeed! Thanks for sharing the link *off to check it*.
Great list! Samwise is the best hobbit, hands down.
My post this week
Samwise for sure. Excellent picks. I love Little John too. Especially that animated version. π
Yes! Those two are my own personal favorites from this list~
Good post! I vote for Tyrion Lannister!
Little John! You’re right–he is hugely underrated, in that written-off-as-a-sidekick way, and now I really want to watch Robin Hood again, haha. Great list π
Little John is pretty awesome. Always good to meet more his fans!
Someone else mentioned Little John on their list today. Such a great idea! Someone should definitely write that back. I also adore Matthew and Marilla. Great characters, both. Awesome list!
Happy TTT!

Maybe the Scarlet Pimpernel saved Sydney Carton at the last moment in a death-defying stunt. We can dream, right?
I thought about Game of Thrones and got overwhelmed by all the choices. I should absolutely have picked Tyrion. I love him!
I had to visit Anne Shirley too but I went with an even more minor character. I do love Matthew and Marilla though.
Great list!
“Maybe the Scarlet Pimpernel saved Sydney Carton at the last moment in a death-defying stunt.” This would be fabulous! Yes please, and where can I find this book? π€©
Great choices this week! John Watson is one of my favorites, especially the first actor to play the character in the Jeremey Brett Sherlock Holmes series.
Yes! I love the Brett version (even more than the “modern” take with Cumberbatch version).
I love the clip of Around the World… The character is played by the famous Mexican actor, Cantinflas. I’ve watched all of his movies which were always so funny and remind me of time spent with the family watching them.
Wow, thanks for telling me about Cantinflas! I just knew that the clip was from a 1950s movie, and I do mean to watch that version — but now I also want to watch Cantinflas’s other movies.
I used to love that Arabian Nights film! (Although the casting was a bit dodgy looking back…) Morgiana is such a good character
So good to come across another person who’s seen the Arabian Nights movie! And truly, Morgiana deserves all the praise she can get.
I often prefer the ‘side’ characters to the main ones – Samwise being a perfect example because I never really liked Frodo – he just annoyed the socks off me.
And, yes to Tyrion – I loved some of his lines – and Yoda of course. Those two have some gems.

That’s so true about Frodo! Even Gollum was more preferable. ;-p If Samwise hadn’t been there, that battle would have been lost.
Ooo! You have some good ones! Love Watson and of course, Matthew and Marilla, too. π Apologies for not visiting here sooner, but thanks for the visit to Finding Wonderland on this week. I appreciate it.
No worries at all. I know how life gets in the way. π
