Foxes and Fairy Tales is hosting another very cool reading challenge in July 2021: TrekAThon Round 1. Each book you read will power the Transporter and let you rescue one crew-member (and once you finish the Scotty prompt, you can combine prompts!). All book choices are your own. The sign-up post is here, and here’s a rundown of the books I hope to read.
1 / Captain Kirk (Commanding Officer) β Read a 5-Star prediction.
The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman
2 / Commander Spock (Executive Officer/ Science Officer) β Read a Science Fiction book.
A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine, winner of the 2020 Hugo Award for Best Novel
3 / Lieutenant Sulu (Helmsman) β Read a book with a weapon on the cover.
Look, the guy’s holding a dagger: Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb
4 / Lieutenant Uhura (Communications Officer) β Read a book everyoneβs talking about.
Or they were talking about in the recent past: Dead Space by Kali Wallace, a locked room mystery in outer space
5 / Ensign Chekov (Navigator) β Read a YA or MG book.
Wise Child by Monica Furlong, an older SFF book
6 / Doctor McCoy (Chief Medical Officer) β Read a book featuring death or a character injury.
Cat and Mouse by Christianna Brand, apparently one of the famous ABCs of the detective genre
7 / Yeoman Rand β Read a book with a red cover.
Can’t get er, redder, than The Red House Mystery by A.A. Milne
8 / Lieutenant Commander Scott (Chief Engineer) β Read a book either set somewhere youβve never been or somewhere youβve never read about. The Scotty Prompt!
Inside the books, i.e. The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde
9 / Nurse Chapel (Head Nurse) β Read a book with a face on the cover.
Well, different versions have different faces on the cover: Mythago Wood by Robert Holdstock
10 / There’s an optional Group Book too.
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
Looks to be a low-pressure fun challenge! See if you want to join in too~

What a fun idea for a reading challenge! And you’ve chosen so many great titles to read for it. I loved both The Eyre Affair and The Invisible Library. Happy reading! π
Super, I’m really looking forward to both those books! π
OMG I love Star Trek! This looks like such a fun challenge!
I’ve never watched Star Trek! The show seemed a bit dated, so have been wary about starting it π
This is very clever, although I reflexively thought I didn’t know enough about Star Trek to participate, then paused to really read. I think I own that Monica Furlong but have not read it. I did enjoy The Eyre Affair, although never got around to reading any of the sequels.
It’s not limited to science fiction/ fantasy — so I’m sure even historical fiction could match up as per the prompts. And I haven’t seen Star Trek, just relying on the graphics and description. See if you want to join in!
This is fun – I look forward to seeing your choices.

Haha, if only I can pull myself out of this here-and-there reading slump, and polish them all off!
Wha- trek a Thon??? I just bought the complete Original series so I’m doing a rewatch of the early episodes. Even though it’s not technically about Trek it caught my eye. π
I need to get Dead Space. and I liked Assassin’s apprentice.
Long Way- sooo good.
I’ve never watched Star Trek, and have always been hesitant to because it looked a bit dated? For Long Way, I’m midway (no pun intended) but it’s rather slow…. I hope it gets better / more plotwise action soon!
I’m participating in this, too, so hopefully we’ll get some good books to fit the prompts! Happy reading!
Cool, see you around for this one! π
Looks like you’ve got a great reading month coming up – The Invisible Library, The Eyre Affair, and The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet are some of my favorites. Happy reading!
Awesome, I’m looking forward to all of these!
