Desert Island Reads #WyrdAndWonder

For the Wyrd & Wonder challenge, throughout May 2021 we have a series of challenge prompts. I’ve managed to tackle most of these by now, and our favorite Desert Island Reads are next on the list. You choose 8 (audio)books, 1 piece of media, and 1 artifact.

As our hosts put it: “Imagine yourself cast away with nothing to do but read. Okay, so this doesn’t sound entirely awful – but choosing our limited island library is the real challenge. We’re not going to worry about solving the challenge of survival, just how to while away the days (weeks? months?) until we’re rescued.”

Castaways may have:

Eight (audio)books (series included) – these float ashore in a watertight chest, phew!

Since we don’t know how long we’ll be stuck on that island, I am going to go with some of the longer books / book series here:

  1. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
  2. An omnibus of all works by Patricia McKillip
  3. Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold
  4. Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke
  5. The Inheritance Trilogy by N. K. Jemisin
  6. Discworld Series by Sir Terry Pratchett
  7. Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit Series by Nahoko Uehashi
  8. Thessaly: The Complete Trilogy by Jo Walton
One podcast, TV show or movie (series included) – for when you really can’t read any more

The Good Place – This is a rib-cracking hilarious show created by the wonderful Michael Schur, about a bunch of misfits who land up accidentally in The Good Place (= Paradise) in the afterlife. Plenty of twists and turns!

One thing you just can’t do without — so long as it’s inanimate, can’t help you escape or communicate with the outside world, and doesn’t require electricity or internet connectivity

I’d probably take a Song of the Sea Adult Coloring book (with multiple sets of paints) to keep me busy. Have you seen this gorgeous animation show (trailer below)? Highly recommended!

Ready to go on a desert island adventure? Which SFF books, movies, podcasts or TV shows would you take with you, as your Desert Island Reads?

This looks like a great desert island readlist! Hitchhiker’s which I need to retry and maybe if I was stranded I’d finally read Pratchett!

Taking a colouring book as the inanimate object is a great choice. I would take that as well.
For books maybe LOTR and the entire Dragonriders of Pern series…

Oh coloring book is a great idea if you have to be stuck on an island without an electronic device. I have a couple of coloring books but it’s taking me forever to finish them. Maybe I need to be stranded on an island 🙂
